Starsand Island Premium Wood, Bamboo & Plant Resources
“Premium wood”, “hardwood”, “bamboo”, “vines”, “hydrangea” — the plant-side resource questions in Starsand Island mostly have the same shape: which tree or zone, which tool, and is there a shop fallback? This page answers those for the wood tiers and the gatherable plants, and then separates out a group of items that searches treat as gatherables but are actually crafted — Radiant Crystal, Lunar Core, Lunar Crystal, Vitality Core, Iridescent Sand, Carbon Line and Fine Salt — with their recipes.
Tool requirements and tree locations are Early Access player findings; recipes and shop prices come from the game’s item and crafting data, which already includes Version 1.0 strings. Nothing in the 1.0 notes so far changes the wood tiers.
Wood tiers at a glance
| Wood | Source | Tool | Processed into | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Softwood | Ordinary trees | Axe | Softwood Plank | — |
| Hardwood | Large trees | Upgraded axe | Hardwood Plank (Cutter II); Rod Shaft (Gear Smith, 4 Hardwood) | General Store 10g (Intermediate) |
| Premium Wood | Giant trees — White Fig above all | Machete (third-tier axe) or better | Premium Wood Plank (Cutter III); Meteor Plank (4 Premium Wood + 1 Lunar Core, Cutter III) | General Store 25g (Senior) |
| Bamboo | Cloudrest Lake bamboo forest | Axe | Bamboo Board (Cutter I, 4 Bamboo); 2 Boards → Bamboo Strip | General Store 15g |
The axe line runs Axe → Impact Axe → Machete → Sharp Machete → Chainsaw. Tool upgrades are covered on the machines and crafting page.
Premium Wood and White Fig trees
- Where: the item text says premium wood comes from “chopping down giant trees”. Players narrow that to White Fig trees — on the hill next to the Exploration Club, and in large numbers on Windflute Island.
- Tool: a player guide says “Machete”, a Reddit thread says “the third tier of axe” — those are the same tool, so the safe statement is Machete (third-tier axe) or better. A lower axe simply will not fell a White Fig.
- Bonus: White Figs are also the tree most likely to drop a large beehive, which is where Queen Bees come from — see the animal products guide.
- Fallback: Zerine’s General Store lists Premium Wood at 25g once you hold Senior rank. For the Fishing Net (5 Premium Wood Planks) or a Meteor Plank project, buying can be faster than a Windflute trip.
Hardwood
Drops from large (not giant) trees and is the mid-game plank: Hardwood Plank at Cutter II is what mid-game builds ask for — the Medium Fish Pond alone takes 15. The Gear Smith turns 4 Hardwood into a Rod Shaft for every fishing rod from Noble upward (rod table). General Store price 10g at Intermediate rank, so hardwood is rarely worth farming by hand past the early game.
Bamboo — Cloudrest Lake
Bamboo grows in the bamboo forest around Cloudrest Lake (official patch notes refer to “Cloudrest Lake bamboo” repeatedly, and the location data files the lake under Bamboo Forest). Cutter I makes Bamboo Boards (4 Bamboo each) and two boards make a Bamboo Strip; both appear across build recipes. Shop fallback 15g.
Vines — two different things
“Vines in Moonlit Forest” means one of two things, and searches blur them:
- Barrier vines — thick growths that block forest paths. You do not chop them; you shoot them down with the bow or crossbow. An early patch (0.2.0869) specifically fixed crossbow arrows not working on vines, which is the clearest confirmation of the intended method.
- Moonshade Tendril — a gatherable plant described as the Moonlit Forest’s variant of hookvine, used in aquascaping/decoration, not in barrier removal.
If a path is blocked, you want the bow. If a recipe wants “vine”, check whether it means Moonshade Tendril. Forest gates and routes: Moonlit Forest map.
Twilight Succulent
Gathered in Moonlit Forest and also farmable: a Grinder turns 2 Twilight Succulents into 1 seed; the plant grows in about 1.75 days in any season. It sells for 9g (the Merchant Ship has paid 18g in lots of 15), and Aurelis asks for it in his three-heart request — see the Aurelis page. The Twilight Succulent Pot blueprint is dug up inside the forest (an EA patch fixed it not appearing).
Echo Bean
A blue bean native to Moonlit Forest. Seeds come from the Grinder (2 beans → 1 seed); growth takes 5 days, any season; sells for 57g. A Reddit thread title names Echo Beans as a gift Youfang likes, though the gift data we hold does not confirm it — check the Youfang page for the verified list. An “Immortal Echo Bean Seeds” variant exists via the Starsand Grinder — see below.
Hydrangea — colours and where they grow
| Colour | Source |
|---|---|
| Blue / light blue | Wild, cut with an axe in Summer–Autumn: just past the Moonlit Forest entrance, Cloudrest Lake, Bastrom Heights, Flower Corridor |
| Pink / purple | Random gift from villagers the first time you talk to them each day |
| Orange | Obtainable since patch 0.4.0144 (earlier builds could not drop it; codex entry fixed the same patch) |
Hydrangeas sell for only 3g but are a frequent gift-list and decoration item; the Hydrangea Scaping Manual is an Island Life Intermediate talent reward. Flower colour breeding is on the farming guide.
Immortal Seeds
Immortal Seeds are a farming system (Lunar Core is the main ingredient) — see the farming guide.
Crafted, not gathered: crystals, cores, sand, line, salt
None of the items below spawn in the world. Every one is an intermediate product:
| Item | Made at | Recipe / input |
|---|---|---|
| Radiant Crystal | Gear Smith | 3 Radiant Core → 1 (Radiant Core = Fluorite Ore in Furnace I) |
| Lunar Core | Furnace III | 4 Moonstone + Oilstone |
| Lunar Crystal | Gear Smith | 3 Lunar Core → 1 |
| Vitality Core | Ammo Station | Primorite 2 + Flamecore 2 + Magnetite 2 + Plainberry Powder 1 (component of Wood Arrows) |
| Iridescent Sand | Gear Smith | 3 Iron Ingot → 1 (“magnetic coloured coating”; dyes and furniture) |
| Carbon Line | Spinning Wheel | Fiber 4 + Charcoal 1; 4 Carbon Line → Fishing Line; the Fishing Net needs 30 |
| Fine Salt | Charcoal Kiln | 4 Salt Brick + 2 Fiber (Salt Brick: forest salt piles or General Store 20g) |
Where the ores come from — fluorite, moonstone, primorite, flamecore, magnetite, iron — is on the ore locations page. Spirit Cube Fragments (another “where do I find” search) are not gathered either: they come out of Uncommon/Rare Ore Chunks in the Ore Analyzer, also covered there.
FAQ
How do you get premium wood?
Fell giant trees — White Fig trees near the Exploration Club and on Windflute Island — with a Machete (third-tier axe) or better, or buy it at the General Store for 25g at Senior rank.
Where are the White Fig trees?
On the high ground beside the Exploration Club and in quantity on Windflute Island; beehive hunters also report White Figs in the woodland between the Exploration Club and Cloudrest Lake and along Flower Corridor.
Where is bamboo?
The bamboo forest around Cloudrest Lake; the General Store also sells it at 15g.
Is radiant crystal something you mine?
No. Smelt Fluorite Ore in Furnace I into Radiant Core, then combine three cores at the Gear Smith.
