Starsand Island Breeding Guide: 54 Variants, Genes & Traits
Breeding in Starsand Island is the route to every rare animal — lop-eared rabbits, coloured sheep, the White Horse, Luna Rabbit — and to the high-trait animals the Senior and Expert Rancher trials demand. This page lists all 54 variants in the game data, the gene rules players have verified, the traits we can name, and the two breeding buildings, and it is clear about where the community still disagrees (fixed colour recipes vs random).
Variant names, building recipes and shop prices come from the game’s animal and machine data, which includes Version 1.0 strings; the gene rules and shortcuts are Early Access player testing (mostly February–May 2026) under re-check for 1.0.
How breeding works
- Put a male and a female of the same species in the same enclosure with a free slot. Babies appear overnight — not every night, and there is a cooldown per animal. No breeding in winter.
- The baby shows up in the enclosure’s product slot and must be placed back in the enclosure to grow.
- You do not strictly need a breeding building: two males and two females free-breeding in one barn is enough to finish the trials, per player reports.
- Happiness still matters (better output), and the developer’s own summary is that breeding “unlocks subspecies” and that “each animal inherits up to six traits”.
Breeding House vs Selective Breeding House
| Building | Tier / price | Recipe | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breeding House | Intermediate Rancher, 3,500g (Green Pasture Ranch) | Hardwood Plank 6 + Leather 3 + Fiber 20 + Iron Sheet 5, Worktable II | Pick the exact pair |
| Selective Breeding House | Expert Rancher, 30,000g | Meteor Plank 6 + Alpaca Wool 8 + Musk 8 + Eternal Alloy 6 + Spring 8, Worktable III | Choose which genes are passed on |
Leather is two Fur at the Loom (pigs, horses, cows drop Fur — see animal products).
Gene inheritance rules
A breeder who reports raising over 100 animals for a DNA video lays out rules that match independent Reddit observations:
- The child has at least as many genes as the parent with fewer genes.
- A gene both parents share is passed 100%.
- Pairing two animals with two genes each gives about a 40% chance of one extra gene.
- A new gene is positive or negative at 50/50.
- A gene neither parent has will never appear — so you cannot breed a trait into a line from nothing; you must buy or find an animal that already carries it.
Rule 5 is the one that matters for trial planning: source your desired trait first, then stack it.
Known traits
There is no complete trait table in any source we trust, so this is the list players have named, with the gap marked.
| Trait | Effect (as reported) |
|---|---|
| Strong | Shorter breeding cooldown |
| Precocious | Grows up faster |
| Twins | 10–40% chance of multiple births |
| Workaholic | +3 to +5 daily work actions (weeding, bug-eating, snail-eating) |
| King | +10 daily work actions; patch notes also reference King-tier cow, sheep and alpaca mount skills |
| Dexterity | Named in reports; effect not described |
| Hypermetabolic | Named; one player reports it cannot coexist with High Yield |
| High Yield | More product |
| Gloom | Negative trait |
| Jump speed bonus (horses) | Named in a patch note about abnormal jump height |
Gap: exact percentages and the full list (the developer says up to six per animal) — Unconfirmed as of August 23, 2026.

Crossbreeding for colour — and the shortcut
Sources disagree on whether colour variants follow recipes. A first-week Early Access guide published a pairing table; multiple later Reddit threads report white + black sheep producing green, purple or white, Cloud Sheep throwing every colour, and “blue + red does not give purple”. We write it as mostly random: breed any two of the species repeatedly. The dependable route is the Islandpedia Bio Research tier-3 reward (register 72 of 75 fish, bugs and animals) — three orange and three blue sheep, reported by several players. Coloured wool sells for 120g and the Intermediate Rancher trial (“Colorful Wool Blanket”, handed to Serena at three hearts) and the Senior Rancher chain need it — see trials.
Lop-eared Rabbit, Luna Rabbit, White Horse
- Lop-eared Rabbit comes from breeding rabbits; patch 0.2.1414 fixed cases where it (and the White Horse) could not be obtained by breeding. The Intermediate Rancher main quest wants a baby lop-eared rabbit, which is where the Breeding House first pays off.
- Luna Rabbit (15 weeding actions) can also come from Bio Research tier 2 or the Intermediate Rancher certification reward, per an Early Access guide.
- White Horse is a breeding result tied to the Senior Rancher training quest; patch 0.5.3429 fixed the horse being returned abnormally after that quest. The Expert trial instead wants a rabbit with four or five positive traits — build that line with rule 5 in mind.
Feeding, feeders and upkeep
The developer’s basics: feed by hand, keep the space clean, interact, and play music (a Ukulele is 2,500g) for mood. Blueprints at the ranch shop automate it by tier — Feeder and Brush (Apprentice), Mirth Feeder (Junior), Poultry Egg Station 4,500g, Cleaning Pod 4,500g, Electric Shearer 800g and Milk Bottle 600g (Intermediate), Love Feeder, Music Box 5,500g and Friendship Collar 4,500g (Senior), Auto Milker and Auto Shearer 15,000g (Expert). An exploit that farmed feed from the Feeding Trough was closed in 0.3.3595. Ranching mentor Pastelle (Green Pasture Ranch, 6:00–22:00) sends her invitation letter on Summer 4, and her Junior trial asks for three Giant Eggs from happy poultry.
How do I get a coloured sheep fast?
Finish Bio Research tier 3 in the Islandpedia for three orange and three blue sheep; otherwise breed Snowool and Ebowool and accept randomness.
Do I need the Breeding House?
No for basic babies (two pairs free-breeding works); yes if you want to pick the pair; the 30,000g Selective house is for gene targeting in the Expert trial.
Why are my animals not breeding?
Check season (never in winter), that both sexes of one species share the enclosure with a free slot, and that the cooldown has passed; babies appear in the product slot and must be placed inside.
