Starsand Island Fishing Guide: Rods, Bait & Angler Quests
Fishing in Starsand Island is a full profession: its own mentor (Delphin), its own certification ladder (Apprentice → Expert Angler), its own gear tree (five rods, a trap, a net) and 105 species across lakes, rivers, three open seas and Moonlit Forest. This guide covers mechanics, the unlock path, rods and bait, traps and nets, every Angler quest and trial — and why “Bait Holder” and “Quality Bait” are not fishing items.
Numbers here (rod recipes, blueprint prices, quest steps) come from Early Access data and the game’s localisation strings and are being re-checked against Version 1.0 (August 18, 2026); where 1.0 changed something, it is flagged.
How fishing works
- Casting. Hold the cast button and aim; a green marker means the spot is valid, red means the water is blocked or too shallow. You must target a fish shadow — casting into empty water catches nothing. The one exception is the Workpedia fishing skill Hooked on Fate, which lets you fish open sea water without a visible shadow.
- Reeling. Once a fish bites, hold to reel. Watch the line colour: white is safe, yellow/orange means the line is under strain, red means it is about to snap and the fish escapes. Ease off for a moment when it turns red, then resume.
- Stamina. Each cast costs 10 stamina, so a long session at the lake eats into a farming day.
- Conditions matter. Every species has a season, time window, weather preference and one or more baits it responds to. Rarity runs I–V; rarity V are the six “King” fish (see the King fish guide).
- Where. Freshwater splits into Lake and River fish. Moonlit Forest adds its own pools — Dreamfall Garden (home of the Glowfish family) and Darkwater Shore. Saltwater splits into generic Ocean fish and the three named seas.
Unlocking: Delphin and the Angler profession
Fishing is tied to the Angler profession. Its mentor is Delphin, who runs AquaBlue Outpost at Half-Moon Bay and keeps the counter open roughly 8:00–22:00. A letter around Summer 3 of year one invites you to sign up, but you can visit earlier. AquaBlue sells the fishing blueprints (rods, Choppers, fish ponds, trap, net) and stocks bait. Delphin is also a romance candidate — see the Delphin page.
Fishing grounds: lake, river, forest and the three seas
| Water | How to reach | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lake | From day one | Largest freshwater roster; many rarity I–II starter fish |
| River | From day one | Home of two King fish (Paddlefish, Arapaima) and all-year staples like Zander and Giant Barb |
| Dreamfall Garden / Darkwater Shore | Inside Moonlit Forest | Glowfish variants, Daisy’s Ricefish, Glassfish, Ink Phoenixfish |
| Luminwave (north sea) | Boat from Starsand Port | Tuna, Anglerfish, Mola Mola, Viperfish; Megamouth Shark (King) |
| Celestwave (south-west sea) | Boat from Starsand Port | Dolphinfish, Flounder, Ribbon Eel, Mandarinfish; Long-barbelled Dragonfish (King) |
| Coral Sea (south-east sea) | Boat from Starsand Port | Bass, Sardine, Blue Tang, Humphead Wrasse; Swordfish (King) |
The open seas unlock after you complete the Starsand Port Construction project and hand Delphin the 30 grapes he asks for. From then on a ferry, The Parrot, runs you out to each sea. Sources disagree on the fare: the item/location data lists 10g per trip, while most player guides and videos report about 30 coins. Treat it as a small fee — roughly 30 coins in current builds, 10g in an early one.
Official naming note: the February 2026 overview calls the lake “Dreamscape Lake” and the eastern sea “Coralwave Sea”; in-game location data uses Dreamfall Garden and Coral Sea. They are the same places.
Fishing rod upgrade path
Five craftable rods, each requiring the previous one as an ingredient. Blueprints are bought at AquaBlue; the certification level in brackets is the Angler rank needed to buy the blueprint.
| Rod | Recipe | Blueprint |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden Rod | Softwood 6, Fiber 4 | 10g |
| Chrono Rod | Copper Ingot 3, Softwood Plank 3, Fiber 10, Wooden Rod | 800g (Apprentice) |
| Noble Rod | Bronze 5, Iron Sheet 5, Prism 5, Rod Shaft, Fishing Line 2, Chrono Rod | 3,500g (Junior) |
| Solar Rod | Spring 5, Alloy 6, Magnet 5, Rod Shaft, Fishing Line 2, Noble Rod | 9,000g (Intermediate) |
| Titanium Rod | Eternal Alloy 6, Lunar Crystal 5, Chip 5, Rod Shaft, Fishing Line 2, Solar Rod | 25,000g (Senior) |
Supporting parts: Rod Shaft is made at the Gear Smith from 4 Hardwood; Fishing Line is 4 Carbon Line (Spinning Wheel: Fiber 4 + Charcoal 1 per Carbon Line). Lunar Crystal and Eternal Alloy come from the late Moonlit Forest ore chain — see ore locations.
Version 1.0 adds three rods to the Multiplayer Shop, bought with Multiplayer Coins rather than gold: Expert Fishing Rod (500 coins), Paradoxical Fishing Rod (400) and Legendary Fishing Rod (600), the last described in its item text as built for fighting fish kings. How to earn the coins is covered in the multiplayer guide.
Two Workpedia skills are worth taking early: Rare Bites (higher rare-bite chance in daytime) and Hooked on Fate (no shadow needed at sea).
Bait: Meat, Veggie, Bug — and the Chopper
Bait in Starsand Island is thrown into the water to summon fish shadows, not hooked on the line. Hold the bait button to scatter several at once. There are three kinds, and every fish lists which ones it answers to:
| Bait | Recipe | Typical targets |
|---|---|---|
| Meat Bait | Fish Fillet 1 + Flour 1 | Most deep-sea and predatory fish, four of the six Kings |
| Veggie Bait | Vegetable Juice 1 + Flour 2 | Many lake/river species, Comet and Fringetail Glowfish |
| Bug Bait | Protein Powder 1 + Flour 2 | Glowfish (King), Paddlefish, many rarity I lake fish |
Bait is crafted in the Chopper line (Chopper I blueprint 600g at Apprentice, Chopper II 1,700g at Junior as an upgrade, Chopper III 4,000g at Intermediate). Sources are not fully consistent on which Chopper makes which bait, so the safe statement is: Chopper I makes Meat Bait; higher Choppers add the other two baits plus Fish Feed (II) and Advanced Fish Food (III). If you only have Chopper I and need Bug or Veggie Bait, AquaBlue sells any bait at 45g each, ten per restock.
Fish Feed and Advanced Fish Food are not casting baits — the first feeds pond fish, the second loads traps. Both are on the fish pond guide.
Fish Trap and Fishing Net (passive fishing)
- Fish Trap — unlocks at Intermediate Angler (blueprint 5,000g). Materials: Rubber 4, Magnet 3, Alloy 3 at a Worktable (Worktable I suffices according to the production recipe; one data field says II). Place it in water, load Advanced Fish Food (Chopper III: Salt Brick 2 + Sugar 2 + Flour 1), and collect the next day. Player testing confirms regular bait does nothing in a trap.
- Fishing Net — unlocks at Senior Angler (blueprint 6,500g). Materials: Rubber 10, Carbon Line 30, Iron Sheet 10, Premium Wood Plank 5 at Worktable III. Throw it over a cluster of shadows to scoop several fish at once. It catches up to purple (rarity IV) and even species new to your codex, but King fish still require a rod.
Angler quests and trials
The profession has five ranks; each rank has a quest and a trial (the trial is the step that blocks your next purchase tier at AquaBlue).
| Rank | Quest | Trial |
|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | Catch 3 fish | Accept the request-board job “New Finny Roommates” |
| Junior | Build Starsand Port, sail to Luminwave, catch a Tuna and a Moorish Idol | Obtain a boat and find a rich fishing ground |
| Intermediate | Build a small fish pond, expand it, collect 1 fish egg | Catch a Glowfish (any non-King variant) |
| Senior | Fill the AquaBlue aquarium with 20 species | Obtain a Giant Barb egg |
| Expert | Catch 2 King fish | — |
Junior-quest tip: Tuna only answers Meat Bait and Moorish Idol wants Bug or Veggie Bait, so craft both before the ferry. The August 20 patch (1.08.3916) mentions a display fix for “the required quantity of Pufferfish” in the Senior Angler quest, suggesting the 1.0 Senior step includes Tiger Puffer (Ocean, Summer/Autumn, 14:00–24:00) — unconfirmed beyond that line. All professions’ trials: trials guide.
Not fishing items: Bait Holder, Regular Bait, Advanced Bait
“Quality bait” and “bait holder” searches land on fishing pages, but these belong to the Exploration Club wildlife system:
- Bait Holder — Apprentice Explorer blueprint (350g); Bronze 2, Softwood Plank 3, Iron Ore 4. A placed device that lures animals.
- Regular Bait — blueprint 150g; Moondew Shroom 2, Mirthshroom 2, Moonflower Pollen 3 at Worktable I. Draws small animals within about 100 m.
- Advanced Bait — Protein Powder 7, Milk 4, Honey 8 at Worktable III. Attracts animals and refreshes new ones.
None of these go in the water. For fishing you want Meat/Veggie/Bug Bait from the Chopper.
FAQ
Can you buy fish food or bait instead of crafting it?
Bait yes — AquaBlue Outpost sells Meat, Veggie and Bug Bait at 45g each, ten per stock. Fish Feed (for ponds) and Advanced Fish Food (for traps) are crafted at Chopper II and III respectively; no shop listing for them has been found.
What are fish eggs for?
Eggs drop from fed pond fish and hatch in the Fish Egg Incubator (one day each). They also count for Intermediate Angler (one egg) and the Senior Angler trial (a Giant Barb egg). Details on the fish pond guide.
Do I need a fishing trial to buy better gear?
Yes. Each Angler rank’s blueprints (Noble Rod at Junior, Solar Rod and Fish Trap at Intermediate, Net and Titanium Rod at Senior) only appear after you clear the matching certification.
How do I get to Luminwave, Celestwave and Coral Sea?
Finish the Starsand Port construction project, give Delphin 30 grapes, then board The Parrot at the port. Each crossing costs a small fare (about 30 coins; an early build listed 10g).
