Starsand Island Character Creation, Outfits & Fashion
Starsand Island’s character creator was rebuilt between the 2025 demo and the February 2026 Early Access launch after players asked for more freedom, and it is now one of the game’s stronger systems: two body types, a full colour wheel instead of preset palettes, more than a hundred facial details, and a wardrobe of more than 200 wearable pieces per body type that all mix and match. This page explains what you can set at creation, what you can change later, every source of outfits in the game, the gender and romance question, and the “Starsand Chic” costume design contest that is open right now.
What the creator offers
| Option | Detail |
|---|---|
| Body type | Two — the developer’s patch notes refer to male and female protagonists throughout; you can play as a guy or a girl |
| Hair / eye / skin colour | Full colour wheel with saturation and brightness sliders (no fixed palette) |
| Eyes | Left and right eye colour set independently (a patch fixed a bug where they could not be given the same preset — i.e. heterochromia is supported by design) |
| Face details | 100+ options: eyebrows, eyeliner, lip colour, face paint and more |
| Hair and hats | Mix freely — a change from the demo, where hats replaced hairstyles |
| Wardrobe | 200+ wearable pieces per body type, fully modular (top, bottom, shoes, hats, accessories) |
| Cultural sets | Outfits inspired by traditional Chinese clothing (crafted from blueprints) and 10 sets inspired by different Chinese ethnic groups, each with a matching dance animation |
These figures come from the developer’s February 9, 2026 pre-launch post and the January 29 Early Access overview. Nothing in the 1.0 countdown posts indicates the creator itself changed at 1.0, so treat the Early Access description as current; we will revise if a 1.0 patch note says otherwise.
Changing your look after creation
You are not locked in. Systems that exist in-game per the patch notes:
- Makeup app on the in-game phone — a makeup system with recolouring steps; makeup purchases happen at a makeup shop interface, and since patch 0.5.3241 some makeup and outfits can be bought with Starsand currency.
- Wardrobe and fitting rooms — outfit changes at home or in shops; since patch 0.2.1185 your chosen hairstyle persists through outfit swaps instead of resetting.
- Clothing store changing room — the boutique has a changing room (a 1.08.3916 fix restored it for multiplayer guests).
- Hairstyles and outfits are collectibles — unlocked hairstyles and outfits appear in the Codex/Outfit Codex, which also tracks pajama-type entries.
- Helmet behaviour — driving a vehicle auto-equips a helmet unless you wear a hat from the PawDelivery/PurrExpress set, which suppresses it.
- Swimsuit auto-switch — set a swimsuit (e.g. Wave Rider/Wave Breaker) and the game switches to it for hot springs and similar interactions.
The pets guide covers the separate pet dressing interface — pets have their own outfits, which is why the costume contest has a Pet category.
Where outfits come from
| Source | What it sells / gives | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereal Styles (Lunelle’s clothing shop, Starsand Town) | Rotating stock of outfits; ethnic-dress sets rotate monthly | Stock refreshes after you sleep; the “Boutique” fitting UI lives here |
| Starsand Shop (Community Center, since March 26, 2026) | Themed outfit sets: Monkey King (Mar 31), Celestial & Aethereal, PawDelivery & PurrExpress, Wave Rider & Wave Breaker (May 29), plus weekly blueprints | Some items purchasable with Starsand currency; stock is randomised |
| Sewing Table | Craft clothing and hair items from blueprints (e.g. ChocoCone Cap, Cookie Fuzz Hair) | Uncrafted items are sorted first since patch 0.3.5809 |
| Free DLC | Neo-Chinese outfits (Chinese New Year pack, quest-gated), Sunny Splash swimsuit + Frog Onesie (Ribbit Holiday / “Gratitude Gift Pack”), Shining Star set | See DLC and editions |
| Paid DLC | Elegant Formal outfits in the $19.99 Classic European pack (included in Deluxe) | — |
| Kickstarter rewards | Exclusive wedding dress and beachwear, delivered as emailed codes after 1.0, Steam-only | Private codes — there are no public codes, see the codes page |
| Steam Workshop / mods (PC) | Community clothing, hair, tops, bottoms, shoes | Most Workshop items are outfit pieces — see the mods guide |
| Multiplayer Shop | Items bought with Multiplayer Coins; launch coverage mentions exclusive rewards there | Exact list unconfirmed as of August 23, 2026 |
Achievements track your wardrobe progress too: Fashion Learner (82.4% of players), Fashion Lover (61.3%) and Fashion Expert (39.4%) form a ladder on the achievements page.
Can you play as a guy? Can you be gay?
Yes to both. The creator offers male and female protagonists, and the romance system does not gate any of the 14 love interests by your character’s gender — sources agree that any avatar can romance any bond character, and the developer’s own patch notes confirm it indirectly by fixing male-protagonist scenes with Loren and female-protagonist scenes with Lunelle. So same-sex romance, including marriage-track cohabitation, is available for every candidate. The full rules (heart thresholds, dating, moving in, what 1.0 added) are on the romance and marriage guide, and each candidate has a page linked from the characters hub.
Starsand Chic: the first costume design contest
The developer teased a costume design contest on August 10, 2026 and opened it on August 19, 2026:
- Categories: Character and Pet.
- Deadline: September 7, 2026 at 8:59 AM PDT.
- Prize hook: winning designs may be developed by the team and added to the game — the same promise that put 20+ player blueprints from the spring homestead contest into 1.0’s Blueprint Library.
- Where: the contest page on the official site (linked from the Steam announcement and the developer’s social channels).
The earlier “Island Life” homestead layout contest (April–June 2026) is the precedent: submissions, a public vote, and Gold/Theme winners shipping in-game, with 40+ Silver/Bronze entries promised in later patches. Expect a similar pipeline for costumes, meaning community-designed outfits could reach the shops in a future update — track that on the patch notes page.
Tips that follow from the facts
- Colour is free, items are not: the colour wheel means most “unique looks” come from recolouring a common piece rather than hunting a rare one.
- Sleep to refresh Ethereal Styles; check the Starsand Shop regularly because set availability is random.
- Ethnic-dress sets rotate monthly at the clothing shop — if you see one you want, buy it then.
- Crafting outfits needs blueprints plus materials — the wood and plant resources and animal products guides cover the fabric and dye-side inputs.
- On PC, the Workshop is the fastest route to a large wardrobe expansion.
Can you customize your character in Starsand Island?
Yes — body type, a full colour wheel for hair, eyes and skin, 100+ facial details, and 200+ mix-and-match wearables per body type. Makeup, hair and outfits can be changed again later in-game.
Can you play as a male character?
Yes. There are male and female protagonists, and all 14 romance options are available to either.
How do you get new outfits?
Lunelle’s Ethereal Styles shop, the Starsand Shop in the Community Center, crafting at the Sewing Table, free and paid DLC, Kickstarter backer codes (Steam-only), the Multiplayer Shop, and on PC the Steam Workshop.
What is the Starsand Chic contest?
The first official costume design contest, open August 19 – September 7, 2026 (8:59 AM PDT), with Character and Pet categories; winning designs may be added to the game.
